Les matières premières utilisées pour la fabrication du verre se trouvent en abondance dans la nature. Les verreries étaient jadis construites à proximité des gisements de sable, ce qui n'a plus raison d'être aujourd'hui car les matières premières sont négociées dans toute l'Europe. Le taux de fer et d'aluminium qu'elles contiennent détermine la couleur du verre fabriqué.

L'industrie verrière privilégie cependant le verre usagé concassé ou groisil. Après traitement, ce groisil est refondu et entre pour plus de 80% dans la fabrication du verre.
